Edit existing symbol

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

To create a new symbol from an existing one is a typical situation where you would edit an existing symbol. An example of how that is done is provided in a sub-topic of the Example topic. That sub-topic is named Creating a symbol from an existing one.

The procedure in general terms is as follows:

1.Insert the symbol that you want to edit, for example a symbol that is as similar as possible to a new symbol that you want to create.

2.Start the 3. Edit command, as described in the linked topic.

3.Double-click the Symbol object to access the Symbol data dialogue. Adjust the details of the symbol, like the name of it and others, as described in the linked topic.

4.Make any needed graphical adjustments to the symbol, considering The Four Golden Rules of symbol making.

5.If needed, adjust the connection points by double-clicking the Connection point objects, thereby accessing the Connection data dialogue.

6.If you are editing a mirror symbol, you wont have any Connection point objects, but you will have Function objects, like contacts, I/O's or cable cores, depending on which type of a mirror it is. To edit them, double-click the Function objects, thereby accessing the Contact dialogue.

7.If you need to add connection point objects or function objects, you can do that by either copying existing ones, or to click the appropriate button in the Symbol data dialogue. You access the Symbol data dialogue by double-clicking the Symbol object.

8.Using the 2. Save command, save the symbol as described in the linked topic.
