Parts for potential reference names

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

The table below, lists the parts that may be used in the potential reference name composition.

Part

Description

Plant

The Plant part is used for the "function aspect" according to IEC1346, and "function oriented high level designation" according to IEC750.

Plant/function is a way of dividing the design according to function, regardless of the location of individual components.

Plant/function is specified in the upper left corner of the drawing frame according to IEC1082, or in the title field according to older standards, in a boundary box, in the plant attribute (ANLAGEI), or as part of the content of the potential name attribute (BEZ).

Location

The Location part is used for the "location aspect" according to IEC1346, and  "physical location" according to IEC750.

Locations is a way of dividing the design according to location, regardless of the function of individual components.

Location is specified in the upper left corner of the drawing frame according to IEC1082, or in the title field according to older standards, in a boundary box, in the location attribute (ORT), or as part of the content of the potential name attribute (BEZ).

Potential name

The Potential name refers to the complete potential reference name with any possible plant and/or location parts excluded.

This is in most cases synonymous with a potential or signal designation, for instance 230VAC or 0.

The IEC1175 standard specifies that this part should be marked with a semicolon (“;”) as separator character.

The IEC445 standard provides naming guidelines, like for instance L1, L2 and L3 for the phases of a three-phase system, N for neutral and PE for protective earth, to mention a few.
