There are lots of international standards that should be taken into consideration when creating electrical circuit diagrams. An example of such a standard is IEC617, which concerns the graphical appearance of the symbols. IEC617 is an international standard as well as a European one. The European standard is called EN60617, as you can see with the same number of the standard but with another notation for the standard itself.
