As already mentioned the standard IEC617 describes the appearance of electrical circuit diagram symbols. For example it defines the distance between the circuit lines in a circuit diagram to be a multiple of 2.5 millimetres. This is commonly interpreted as a distance of 5 millimetres, which is of course, is a multiple of 2.5 millimetres.
IEC617 has been in force since the 1980´s and is today well-established. The standard has been updated several times; an example of the changes that has been introduced during the time that the standard has been in force is that filled-in terminals are now prohibited. Earlier it was allowed to draw in such a way.
