Chain reference (both types allowed)

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

Chain references means, that the references are made in a chain starting with lower sheet numbers and continuing with increasing sheet numbers. This means that the first potential reference within such a chain will refer forward to the next sheet where similar potential reference exists. In that drawing sheet, a similar reference will be made to the previous drawing sheet. The chain may continue with multiple similar pairs of references.

The figure below shows a simple example with three sheets and four potential reference symbols within each chain, constituting two pairs, according to the description above.

If you want to have chain references, you should consider the following:

1.Set the Type of potential references to Chain reference.

2.The total number of potential reference symbols within the chain (with the same potential reference name) must be even. In the first and the last drawing sheet in the chain, there must only be one present. In all other drawing sheets where the potential reference name in question is present, there must be two. Otherwise, an unbroken chain can not be achieved. Please refer to the figure above.

3.The complete potential reference name must be identical for all potential reference symbols within the chain. That may be achieved differently for each one of them, since there are at least four different ways of specifying plant and location. Which one you use, does not matter. (Title field/drawing frame, boundary box, plant/location attribute, as part of the potential name attribute).

4.If you, despite the selection of Chain reference, put an exclamation mark in the end of one of the potential names, that potential reference symbol will be interpreted as a source to which all other potential reference symbols within the potential will refer, as if you had chosen Source reference. This makes it possible to mix source and chain references in the same project.

5.If a chain of potential references is broken, meaning if a potential reference does not have "a friend" to refer to, you will get an error message in the OnLine Protocol. That is what will happen if you, for instance, have an odd number of references, or two references in the first and/or last drawing sheet within the chain.

Technical information

The order between the drawing sheets is decided in the following way:

Drawing sheets are sorted by filename in ascending order. That order is automatically displayed in the Drawing Manager, and is consistent with an order by sheet number within each document code, where document codes may include plant information, location information, document kind information or any other information that is suitable for your needs.
