A-Z: Main symbols

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

The resource categories A-Z (CAPITAL LETTERS) contain main symbols.

Please note that the categories chosen for these standard main symbols are not always fully consistent with IEC1346, since IEC1346 has a tendency to be quite rough in its division. The rightmost column in the table below describes the definition of each letter according to IEC1346, as a reference.

The table below describes the resource categories as they are used in the IEC1082 symbol library.

Resource category

Use in the standard IEC1082 symbol library

IEC1346 use

A

Assembly, sub-assembly

Assembled devices like RC circuits

Two or more purposes or tasks

B

Transducers, pilot switches

Sensors and pilot switches. Please note that actuators for pilot switches are found under lower case e (pilot switch actuators).

Converting an input variable into a signal for further processing

C

Capacitors

Capacitors

Storing of energy, information or material

D

Binary elements, memories

Traditionally used for PLC.

D is not used by standard IEC1082 symbols

Not defined in IEC1346

E

Miscellaneous

Not used by standard IEC1082 symbols

Providing radiant or thermal energy

F

Protective equipment

Fuses, ground fault interrupters (RCD), overcurrent protection, short circuit protection, surge relay

Direct protection from dangerous or unwanted conditions

G

Generator, power supply

Generators and batteries

Initiating a flow of energy or material

H

Signalling devices

Lamps, bells, horns, indicators

Producing a new kind of material or product.

Signalling devices belong to P according to IEC1346.

I

Instrument

This is a library of its own containing over 200 instrument symbols inspired by SSG.

Not defined in IEC1346

J

Free

J is not used by standard IEC1082 symbols

Not defined in IEC1346

K

Relays, contactors

Coils for relays

Processing signals or information

(Relays and PLC's belong here according to IEC1346)

L

Inductive resistors

Coils, inductors

Not defined in IEC1346

M

Motors

Motors and motor circuits

Providing mechanical energy for driving purposes

N

Amplifiers, controllers

N is not used by standard IEC1082 symbols

Not defined in IEC1346

O

Free

O is not used by standard IEC1082 symbols

Not defined in IEC1346

P

Measuring, testing devices

P is not used by standard IEC1082 symbols

Presenting information

Q

Heavy-current switchgear

Dis-connectors, coils for contactors, automatic fuses, overload and short circuit protection, miniature circuit breakers (MCB)

Controlled switching or varying a flow of energy, of signals or of material

R

Resistors

Resistors, potentiometers

Restricting or stabilizing motion or a flow of energy, information or material

S

Switches, selectors

Hand and foot operated switches and selectors

Converting a manual operation into a signal for further processing

T

Transformers

Transformers

Conversion of energy maintaining the kind of energy

U

Modulators, electrical to non-electrical

Modulators, inverters, rectifiers

Keeping objects in a defined position

V

Tubes, semiconductors

Diodes

Processing (treating) of material or products

W

Transmission routes

The cable macro is found under lower case b (Cables...).
W is not used by standard IEC1082 symbols.

Guiding or transporting from one place to another

X

Terminals, connectors

Macros for terminals and connectors are found under lower case a (Terminals...).

X is not used by standard IEC1082 symbols.

Connecting objects

Y
