In network installations of cadett ELSA, a few services belonging to the software are running on the server.
•If a server-based licensing system is used and it is located on the same server as cadett ELSA, one or multiple services are used to manage the licenses. Those services are however not in any way affected by the Service Management Feature that is discussed here.
•The Catalogue databases as well as some other central databases are managed by the Spider service, which essentially is a database server.
•If multiple network installations are used, for example at different sites, these installations can be connected to each other using a feature called the “Replicator”, which is also implemented as a service running on each cadett ELSA server.
If – for any reason – a need to restart, to stop or to start either the Spider or the Replicator occurs, this is normally possible to do from the server only. Users not having access to a remote desktop connection to the server are typically not been able to perform this task, making it necessary to involve administrators, a procedure that might be unnecessarily time-consuming in large organisations.
The Service Management Feature offers an opportunity to perform the mentioned tasks directly from a workstation, without any need to login to the server.
The basis of the feature is yet another service – this one called “cadett” – running on the server. A utility on the workstations is used to communicate with the cadett service. Using this utility a user can for example send a command to the cadett service to stop or start the Spider service.
In short the user starts a utility on the workstation, and sends a command to the cadett service to stop or start the Spider. The cadett service then does just that.
