Inheritance of terminal group name and index works very well in circuit diagrams that are drawn consequently either vertical or horizontal. When a circuit diagram sheet contains both vertical and horizontal parts at the same time, problems will arise.
Figure 1284: In a mixed way of drawing, like in this example, inheritance cannot be used.
In the figure above, you can see that irrespective of whether you read from left to right, meaning a vertical way of drawing, or from top to bottom, meaning a horizontal way of drawing, you will get errors somewhere.
The solution to this problem is to specify index and terminal group names for all the terminals. To still have the correct graphical appearance, it is necessary to make all terminal group names and indexes invisible, except for the first one in each group.
You accomplish that by clicking the Sel… button in the Appearance section of the main Terminal symbol dialogue. Thereafter you select Invisible in the Terminal group name after first terminal field.
There are of course some disadvantages associated with this method. The circuit diagram will be harder to edit. Changing terminal group name will for instance involve changing it in all terminal symbols, instead of only in the first symbol. The same is true for changing index. Invisible information also makes finding errors more difficult. It is both easier to make errors and harder to find them when relevant information is invisible.
Therefore, we recommend that you avoid this method as far as possible, and that you reserve it for circuit diagrams that really are both horizontal and vertical simultaneously.
