Item designations for cables

Please, note that the composition of item designations for cables is separated from conventional devices.

Item designations for cables can be composed in several ways complying with IEC1346.

A product-oriented reference designation could for example be –W100.

A function-oriented reference designation could instead be for example =W100.

It is however relatively common to use cable numbers that do not correspond to the standard. For example, pure numbers such as 1000 are sometimes used. It is no problem to handle such numbers in cadett ELSA. If you for example use them in combination with so-called separator character dependent item designations (the most common configuration of item designations), it is however not possible to have multiple cables with the same cable number. Troubles caused by that are however rare. There is also an alternative technique available – so-called separator character independent item designations – that makes it possible to separate several cables with the same name, even for item designations that do not comply with the defined composition.
