With this check-box, you decide if a new item designation should be generated when you insert a main symbol. It does not matter if you do that from the Symbol Insert Tool, from the Catalogue, or manually with the Insert command.

 

In most cases it is suitable to do so. The only situation where it might be be better not to, is when you specify all item designations manually, but if you do, you probably would turn automatic item designation generation OnLine off entirely, and then the setting that is discussed here does not matter at all.

 

The recommended setting in most cases is therefore active.
