Some of the parts that the item designations are composed of, have embedded separator characters. That is for example true for plant and location, where the most common separator characters are equal sign ("=") and plus ("+").

 

It is possible to specify which separator character to use for each individual part, like for example plant, separately for each device type. In other words, it would be possible to use a different plant separator character for conventional devices than for PLC and/or or Cables. However, in most cases, that would simply be confusing and therefore stupid.

 

If you activate the Synchronise separator character with conventional devices feature for PLC and/or for Cables, the specification of separator characters for each part in the PLC or Cables section respectively will be disregarded. Instead, the separator characters specified for Conventional devices will be used for PLC and/or for Cables as well. That will make it easier to edit separator characters, since it will be made in one single place, and also reduce the risk of creating "crazy compositions".
