Symbol standard (symbol library)

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

You can choose between existing Symbol standards with the help of the list that appears if you click on the down-arrow to the right of the field.

The handling of Symbol standards, like for instance creation of new ones, is located in the Symbol standards/Symbol libraries tab of the Settings module.

cadett ELSA can handle more than one symbol library. This is due to the fact that it can be beneficial to be able to use several different standards. Different standards mean different symbols for the same resources. In order for the relations between resources and symbols to be unambiguous within a project, it must be specified which Symbol standard to use in the project.

For each project, you must therefore specify which Symbol standard to use. This is done with this project parameter.

A number of ready to use Symbol standards are included in the delivery of cadett ELSA:

Symbol standard

Description

IEC-L

Horizontal ("Lying down") symbols according to IEC617 in the older application IEC113 (which preceded IEC1082).

IEC-S

Vertical ("Standing up") symbols according to IEC617 in the older application IEC113 (which preceded IEC1082).

IEC1082-L

Horizontal symbols according to current IEC617 and IEC1082 standards.

IEC1082-S

Vertical symbols according to current IEC617 and IEC1082 standards.

IEC1714-L

Vertical symbols in a new symbol library according to the most recent standards. Will be introduced in cadett ELSA R43.

IEC1714-S

Horizontal symbols in a new symbol library according to the most recent standards. Will be introduced in cadett ELSA R43.

DIN5-L

Not used. Please refer to DIN5-S.

DIN5-S

Symbols according to the old German DIN standard. Please note that the current German DIN standard is identical with IEC1082.

JIC-L

Not used. Please refer to JIC-S.

JIC-S

Symbols according to the American "Joint Industrial Council" standard.

LAYOUT

Cabinet layout. This is primarily a technicality. In cadett ELSA you do not have a separate Symbol standard for cabinet layout. The same symbol database is used for both cabinet layout and circuit diagrams. However, certain kinds of simplified cabinet layout symbols are collected into a special LAYOUT directory. These symbols are normally completely without attributes.

The Symbol standard setting is utilized in the following way in the drawing environment of cadett ELSA:

1.The Symbol standard states from which symbol library the symbols should be fetched. Technically this means that the standard controls the path which AutoCAD primarily searches for symbols. In addition, the Symbol standard controls which symbol database the OnLine Engine should use.

2.When you select a resource from a catalogue, the associated symbol from the current symbol library will be fetched and used automatically in cadett ELSA.

The condition for this to work is that the catalogue contains information about which symbol to use for the current Symbol standard, that the symbol is registered in the symbol database and that the symbol itself exists.

Vertical and horizontal symbol variants are placed in the same symbol library, even if they are defined in separate Symbol standards. IEC1082-S and IEC1082-L therefore refers to the same symbol library with the same symbol database. (The IEC1082 symbol library is typically located in a directory called X:\ELSA\SYMBOLE\IEC1082 or similar).

The same is true for other symbol libraries, such as the IEC symbol library with the associated Symbol standards IEC-S and IEC-L.
