Another important standard is the IEC1082. As the standard number implies this is a later standard. It appeared in the middle of the 1990´s. IEC1082 describes the location and text height of the notations that surrounds the symbols such as item designations, connection numbers, cross-references etc.
When IEC1082 was established as new standard it implied a certain amount of changes compared to the standard that had been in force earlier (IEC113). These changes especially concerned the connection numbers. In the earlier standard the connection numbers for horizontal symbols were placed under the lines. According to IEC1082 such symbols should have their connection numbers located above the lines.
Vertical symbols earlier had their connection numbers located on the right side of the lines and they were horizontally oriented. When IEC1082 came to be in force the connection numbers were both moved and rotated so that they ended up on the left side of the lines and vertically oriented.
