How the attributes should be positioned

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

The IEC standard gives general recommendations about the positions of the attributes. This has however changed over time.

In the IEC legacy symbol library, the attributes are positioned according to the old IEC113 standard.

In the IEC1082 symbol library, the attributes are instead positioned according to IEC1082.

An even newer symbol library is currently under development. In that, the attributes have been rearranged according to the most recent IEC1714.

The description below, is primarily meant for symbols in the IEC1082 symbol library, with attributes positioned in the way they typically have been from the middle of the 1990's, until recent days.

The figure below shows a vertical symbol with attribute positions that are typical for the IEC1082 symbol library.

Please note that the product designation attribute - BEZ - is placed directly to the left of the symbol, and in the middle of it in the vertical direction.

Worth noting is also that all attributes to the left of the symbol are right adjusted, meaning that the text justification is right.

Location designation - ORT - is placed above the product designation (BEZ).

Function/plant designation - ANLAGEI - is placed above the location designation.

The symbolic item designation - LABEL - is placed in the same position as the product designation (BEZ), meaning that we have two attributes on top of each other, which makes it somewhat messy there. These two attributes are however placed in separate layers, which are never visible simultaneously. Therefore, you will only see them one at a time in the drawing sheets.

The DATA and SYMBDEF attributes are invisible. The positions of them therefore does not matter at all.

The figure above shows a horizontal symbol with attribute positions that are typical for the IEC1082 symbol library.

Attributes that are right justified in vertical symbols are typically centred in horizontal symbols.

Item designation attributes are centred and placed above the symbol with product designation (BEZ) and symbolic item designation (LABEL) closest to the symbol and on top of each other.

Above that, you find the location designation (ORT), and above that the function/plant designation (ANLAGEI)
