Field length adjustment

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

If you want to adjust the field length of the INDEX field or of a user defined field, you are referred to the Database structure topic.

Below, you will find a description of how you can adjust standard fields other than INDEX.

The field lengths in the database files of a Catalogue are controlled by a set of prototype DBF files placed in the SUPPORT directory.

The SUPPORT directory is a subdirectory of the cadett ELSA main directory. Example:

X:\ELSA\SUPPORT

The names of these prototype files are listed in the table below.

To adjust the field length of a standard field other than INDEX, please follow the steps below:

1.Determine in which database file the field that you want to adjust is found. Please refer to the Standard database structure topic.

2.Exit cadett ELSA on all workstations.

3.Using a suitable database file editor, adjust the field length of the field in question in the corresponding prototype database file listed in the table above.

4.Restart cadett ELSA and open the Catalogue.

5.The field length will be automatically adjusted.

Please note that using a database editor that is not suitable for the purpose - like Microsoft Excel - may corrupt the database files with loss of data and prevention of further use of the system as a consequence.

An editor that is verified to function properly in this regard is DBF Viewer Plus version 1.74:

We strongly advise against using the DBF Viewer Plus or any other software to directly access any other database files in cadett ELSA than the ones described above. If you do, you may loose your data and cadett ELSA may stop working altogether.
