In this field, you enter the name of database file that the information should be collected from. Either it can be a specific database file with drive, directory, file name, and file type, or a symbolic general name, aiming at one of the TARGET databases of the current project. A symbolic file name could for example be written as *A.DBF, which refers to a database file in the TARGET directory of the current project, which name is the short project name followed by “A” and with “DBF” as filetype. (That particular case refers to the TARGET database used for wire and cable lists).
Independent of which of the described ways of defining the TARGET database that you choose to use, you can either type the filename or select it using a dialogue box. If you want to select, you click the Select db file button. How you make your selection is described below in the Select db file topic.
The PDS Project Database Server in cadett ELSA has access to all project information. When generating reports where information from the PDS is needed, one of several reserved temporary database names (*A.DBF, *B.DBF etc.) is used. The Report Generator recognizes these special names and contacts the Dynamic OnLine if needed. The Dynamic OnLine in turn collects the needed information from PDS and creates a TARGET database that is a temporary database that in most cases is situated in the TARGET directory of the current project. From this TARGET database the Report Generator then gets information to the report. The file names of these TARGET databases are the short name of the project plus an additional character. In most cases the reports are created from one of these TARGET databases, even though other options are available as well.
The Table of available TARGET databases sub-topic, contains a table with descriptions of all standard TARGET databases.
