In the example above, the location designation of the first fuse is +D3. "Location" refers to the spatial location of the device in question. According to the standards (both the old IEC750 and the current IEC1346), the location shall always be marked with a plus sign.

 

Location designations may be divided in levels in the same way as plant/function designations. The same rules are valid here too. This means that all three described methods can be used to separate the levels. Dots or a plus sign ("+") can be used between the levels. Even the third – and in some way maybe worst method without separator character – is applicable for locations.

 

An example of how location designations in multiple levels can be utilised is in larger plants where the first level might refer to a building, the second to a room and the third to a cabinet. Even deeper structures occur where even the cabinet itself is divided into several sub-levels.
