In the old ELSA81 drawing frames, the STANDARD text style referred to cadett ELSA’s ELISO.SHX font file. A disadvantage with the old SHX fonts is that text is defined as graphics when plotted, for instance when PDF files are created. Unfortunately, it is impossible to create searchable PDF files using that kind of font.

 

To enable searchable PDF files to be created, the SHX font must be replaced with a TrueType font. This is done automatically by contemporary script sequences and by the QuickPDF feature. However, when automatically changing font, the exact height and width of each text, such as item designations and cross-references, might change slightly. Sometimes, that means that texts end up conflicting with each other, which of course is a nuisance when it happens.

 

The solution to that dilemma, is to use a TrueType font from start, thus eliminating the need for text font replacement altogether. Therefore, the STANDARD text style in the ELSA390 drawing frames refers to ISOCPEUR.TTF, which is a nice-looking font very similar to the old ELISO.SHX.

 

20–30 years ago, using a TrueType font as standard was still considered stupid due to a performance penalty caused by the graphics being mathematically more complicated. Contemporary computer hardware however handles this brilliantly, resulting in that downside no longer being noticeable.
