With this check-box, you decide if new item designations should be generated when you copy main symbols. In most cases they should. The only situation where it would be natural to say that they should not, would be when you enter all item designations manually. If you do that, however, you would probably turn off automatic item designation generation all together, and in that case, this setting would not matter anyway.

The combination of Automatic item designation generation OnLine activated, and When symbols are copied deactivated, is somewhat contradictory. Main symbols that are copied, will get the same item designation as the symbols that was copied, which in most cases will be in conflict with the original. An error will be created more or less by default. If the copy is placed within a boundary box with different plant and location than the surroundings of the symbol that is copied, that might however not be the case. Therefore it is not always true that the mentioned combination is stupid. In some cases it in fact makes some sense!

In most cases, however, the recommended setting is to activate this setting.
