This setting controls a presentation feature of the more subtle kind. Words are not the best way of explaining the meaning of it. It is often argued that a picture says more than a thousand words. That is especially true in this case.

If you activate this feature, the link icons are dragged towards the terminals as far as possible as shown in the right part of the figure above. If this feature on the other hand is deactivated, each link will be presented in its own column, as shown in the left part of the same figure.
Possibly this finesse may give some additional satisfaction to those for which the aesthetics occupy a central place of their existence.
