Practical experiences from working with super projects

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

For several obvious reasons, super projects are a very useful tool to facilitate management of large documentations. There is however a cost associated with it. Therefore, super projects should be used only when they are truly needed. If the total number of drawing sheets does not exceed approximately 500, the disadvantages in most cases outweigh the advantages.

The cost for a super project is mainly paid in performance. Working in a sub-project of a super project is significantly slower than working in a conventional project of the same size.

A practical work-around for that disadvantage, is to temporarily disconnect a sub-project from the super project, when doing extensive changes in it, especially if those changes are mainly concentrated within the sub-project, with no or little effect on other sub-projects. When you are done with the changes, you can simply connect the sub-project to the super project again. A disadvantage with this procedure is that the risk of a need for a regeneration of the super project data-base increases. In cadett ELSA Enterprise, a convenient feature to automatically perform such a regeneration is however available.
